Method development and optimization
We provide custom made analytical methods that can be directly implemented in an industrial environment. We develop and optimize both routine and high level technological analytical methods. The method development will be carried out according to the client’s needs. It can be developed on our clients’ instruments or on our own. We can provide the necessary training when transferring everything to the client’s industrial environment. This to make sure the implementation runs smoothly and the necessary know-how is transferred. A perfect example is the multitrace method (SGS multitrace) developed for SGS.
(Non)-routine measurements
Companies do not always have the necessary analytical equipment or expertise of their own to solve a specific problem. In that case we can develop a custom made method and perform the required measurements. Most of the time we are approached for measuring very low concentrations in complex samples. This requires accurate sample preparation in combination with sensitive analytical equipment. In other cases the customer does not know exactly which molecules cause a specific problem. We have the necessary instruments for both trace level analyses and for identification of unknown components. Also less complex analytical questions can, of course, be handled on request
Every analytical method is validated, so we can guarantee the generated data is correct. We make the difference by quality. All results are critically reviewed by our analytical experts.
Our laboratory acts according to ISO17025 and we possess a BELAC accreditation for certain test methods.
Independent method validation
Guidelines for method-validation, drawn up by our own analytical experts, have been approved by BELAC and have subsequently been implemented in other laboratories. Furthermore we have various reference techniques available, allowing the validation of each new analytical method.
Scientific support of R&D-projects
Different knowledge platforms have been constructed to facilitate the scientific support of R&D-projects. As for element analysis, two of the latest knowledge platforms that are being created are non-destructive elemental analysis and speciation analysis. For organic analysis the focus is on Multi-component and trace level analysis.

Our services go beyond analytical support. We strive at providing total solutions. More than 500 highly qualified scientists are currently working at VITO, furthermore international partnerships with universities and other research institutions have been accomplished. For each project, we search our way through this scientific web and compose the ideal interdisciplinary team. Analytical measurements can serve as a starting point for the development of control programs, health and environmental risk-evaluation, process-optimization, etc.
